The distance by sea from London to Ile d' Ouessent, France is 397.
From Ile d' Ouessent to Gibraltar, 918.
From Gibraltar to Odessa, Ukraine is 2,169.
Total distance 3,406 nautical miles. Yet this distance had not stopped the British from maintaining a long campaign in Crimea during the 1850s.

The distance from New York to the Straits of Florida is 1,197.
From the Strait of Florida to Veracruz, Mexico, 792.
The total distance is 1,989 nautical miles. This distance had not stopped the US from maintaining a successful campaign to capture Mexico City.

The distance from New York to the Straits of Florida is 1,197.
The distance from the Straits of Florida to New Orleans is 524.
Total distance 1,721 nautical miles. In between New York and New Orleans the US held Fortress Monroe, Key West and by late 1861 Port Royal, SC and Ship Island, MS.

There was no major location in the Confederacy that could not be accessed from the metropolis of New York/Brooklyn/Newark and the other major east coast ports of the US.
Steamships were more reliable, especially in passing channels and straits. The maneuverability in harbors and rivers made the sailing ships obsolete.

Nearly all of the first 27 months of the US Civil War was dominated by the US effort to close as many of the 13 ports at which the Confederate RR system touched the coasts, and to capture the 5 places on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers where the Confederacy might possess a railroad line that led to a river city. The US never had to capture Louisville/New Albany or Cincinnati/Covington.

Interesting stats and observation. Thanks for the info. What were the 13 CS ports.

Off top of my head and some are guesses; Galveston, New Orleans, Mobile, Tampa, Key West, Fernandina Beach, Savanah, Charleston, Wilmington, Norfolk............?
This isn't the greatest map, but it is easy to read.

Norfolk, Wilmington, Savannah, Mobile and New Orleans were the most important points. Charleston was important at times, but it wasn't set up as a major port.
