This sauce has been popular for nearly two hundred years. Afaik its similar if not the same as British brown sauce that is still popular as ever particularly at breakfast time.

Didn't know that. A1 is good, so British brown sauce is, too.
 
I recently watched a documentary about Tabasco sauce...who the brand was started by Confederates who fled the US at the end of the war for Mexico and invented the brand. I started using Tabasco shortly thereafter....never thought to try it before watching that
