I visited the Staunton River Bridge Battlefield Park in Virginia yesterday evening after 530pm. It is an isolated location so one must make an effort to travel the back roads to see it. I was the only one on the property. The vistor center is only open on Saturday and Sunday.
Linked here is an old post from 2019 with an excellent description of the battle and many views of the park. However, that post lacked photos of the artillery placements. At some point in the time, it got the name Fort Hill. The largest in my photos below had 7 cannon positions around it to defend from all directions. The depression was the bomb proof. Like most everywhere, woods have grown up so you can't see the river below from the fort now.
The only negative was the bad shape of one of the markers. Needs a new cover as you can see. I was pressed for time so I did not walk the entire 1.7 mile trail. But it is a family friendly rail to trail experience. Also nice to see a mowed fort to better view the earthworks as spring rains have made for vigorous grass and weed growth on similar batteries at Petersburg that I visited today.
