I was looking at another thread on a resting places in Florida. I tracked down a roster of a unit and I started looking at state troops, militia, ETC. Got me to thinking about navies.

I know there were state naval units in Texas and in Virgina in the early part of the war. I wondering if these two were anomalies or if most, if not all, other states had comparable service.

Georgia established a State Navy in 1861, although it was not significant.

I'm not aware of any "state naval units" in Texas. I know there were armed steamboats defending some rivers and ports, but I assumed they were under Confederate control. What do you know about naval units under Texas state control?

South Carolina had a very short lived "naval milita" that operated around Charleston Harbor prior to the surrender of Fort Sumter. I believe most of their vessels were then put into regular CSN service.

The Virginian Navy was transferred in it's entirety to the CSN after the state left the union. At that time, it was in possession of a number of prominent vessels.

Texas had the "Texas Marine Department". They were a jack of all trades type of force that was a combination of regular naval service, transport of troops and supplies and a revenue cutter service. Eventually they fell under CS Army control but had some notable vessels and engagements.

I was wrong amd right. Yes, there was a Texas Marine Dept. However they were under control of the CSA. Sort of like USCG in WW2.

Texas Marine Division

When Farragut's Navy steamed pasted Fort Jackson/Fort Phillip below New Orleans I recalled the Confederates had at least two State of Louisiana gunboats. I believe one was the Governor Moore who put up a gallant fight before sinking. I can't recall the other one.

The General Quitman, previously named Galveston, was the second.

Calling members @mjr251 and @AndyHall for any Texas State Navy during the Civil War information.
Here is one of the posts I made about steamers built by the Howard Shipyard in Indiana that were used in the war. This one in particular was used to great effect by the Texas Marine Dept.

What happen to the GENERAL QUITMAN steamer; did she get set afire by her crew and destroyed, like several others in the Battle of the Forts below New Orleans, or did she escape?

Interestingly several states still have 'navies' in the form of State Naval Militias. These are seperate from Naval Reserve units. These can be like State Guard militias, but some resemble National Guard units. This depends on if the President can call the unit in to Federal du These go by different names, but Alaska, Ohio, New York, South Carolina, and Texas have these. New Jersey has one that does not train but is really just names on a list.
