St. Mary's, Georgia.

I was doing research for my persona, wanting to base it as close to my hometown as I can since my town didn't exist in that time frame and decided to use St. Mary's as the jumping off point. Only town that really existed back then.
Looking into the history of the town, I followed the Wiki link (I know not a good source of info) when I noticed just a simple bold little statement :
"The United States Navy Bombarded the town's shoreside buildings during the American Civil War."

Does anyone know anything about this? Or read this somewhere?

I have searched everywhere and cannot find confirmation of this.
It does make a strange bit of sense.

The town was known as a haven for Blockade Runners at the beginning of the war, and was abandoned during the war around 1862. From what I've gathered around the same time Ft. Clinch was abandoned.

There are no prewar buildings I can think of along the river front. This could be accounted for by Hurricanes or erosion; however I cannot remember, other than Langs Seafood, any being on the river front until about 20 years ago. Almost every older building is built away from the river and postwar. Considering people have been settling there since around 1763 and earlier that is a little odd for a fishing village.

It is known that the Union traveled up the St. Mary's River. From my understanding for troop transport and hunting Blockade Runners. (Though I would think the latter would be fruitless as most of our area is swamp and pretty dangerous for anyone who doesn't know the critters and plants)

Any insight would be appreciated.

IMPORTANT FROM GEORGIA.; Bombardment and Destruction of St. Mary's.

NOV. 21, 1862

The Savannah Republican of the 13th, says that on Sunday last the Federals attempted to land at St. Mary's, Ga., but were repulsed. The gunboats then shelled, and completely destroyed the town.

Cheers,
USS ALASKA

Thank you so much this has been driving me nuts. LOL So Sunday 11/16/1862, Ft. Clinch was ordered abandoned by Lee in March of 1862. I love finding things like this! I wonder if they ran into a unit of the Wiregrass 4th or Blockade Runners or both...
Do we know which unit?
More research, into the breach we go.:bounce:

Already found a treasure in the second link. At the end of an article about a school being opened in St. Mary's a mention of General D.L. Clinch . June 1843.
He is rather fascinating to me. He fought in the Seminole war in Florida. His son-in-law was Robert Anderson Commander at Ft. Sumter when the first shots were fired. 2 of his boys were in the Wiregrass 4th.

So this article is rather interesting and predicted a "Navy Yard" 157 years before there was one. And I am totally lost in the rabbit hole, stuck at work, with no one to share my findings with. LOL

Ya could be chasing the rabbit I am.. which is coming up an empty hole, probably because of the very wise decision to keep their mouths shut.... Unionists in Savannah. I know there were some on the coast, since a few of them ended up as Pilots for the USN, (white and African American) and there was a largish circle in Atlanta, but in Savannah proper, they seem to have kept their sentiments to themselves.

I'm not surprised. There was home guard as official CSA units like the one below for where I am from. I think they covered the area up to Savannah at one point.

So here is an odd mention of Union Sympathy. Not Savannah though.
