St. Joseph's Catholic Orphan Society was formed in 1849 due to the number of orphans left behind after the cholera epidemic in 1832. The society built its first home in 1850, but because there were so many children it had to relocate to its present buildings in Crescent Hill in 1850. Crescent Hill is part of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
They took care of many orphans during the Civil War and have continued their commitment to children to the present day.
This cookbook was sold in 2009. It was one of the fund raisers for the Home. It contains recipes from patrons, staff and friends of the Home. My daughter-in-law works for St. Joseph Orphan's Home. I was happy to contribute a few recipes to this book. The recipes are new and old ones and a book well worth having. It is divided into Appetizers and Beverages, Breads, Soups, Salads, Casseroles, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, and Desserts.
One of my favorite contributions is Ms. Cindy's Playdough recipe. She is a teacher at the home. We have to remember this home is for children and this one of recipes they would use in playtime.
Playdough
3 cups flour
1 1/2 cup salt
3 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
3 cups water
food coloring for color
Combine ingredients and continuously stir over a medium heat. The playdough will begin to pull away from the sides of the pot. Continue o stir until not sticky to touch. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Store in an air-tight container.
I can remember so many fun times working with playdough with my children, grandchildren and their friends making all sorts of things. This is a great recipe to have and make when you have children or work with children.
