As far as battles are concerned, 1861 is generally thought of as rather favoring the Confederates. Unless, that is, you know how to spin. The Cleveland Plain Dealer of Feb. 26, 1862, summarized the score:

Recapitulation:
Union victories: 23
Rebel victories: 7
Ratio: 3:1

Does make the Yanks feel better.

Many years ago I posted something along these lines,
If we compare the North and the South to boxers in a ring,
The south landed many hard jabs to the chin of the Union early on in the fight, (Virginia)
While the north was landing heavy body blows to the south. (Trans Tennessee and the Western Campaign)

The victories the South enjoyed in Virginia and Maryland were tactical, the victories the North enjoyed in the Western and Trans Tennessee were strategic.
