Though it was usual brass lid but started looking at it and it resembled a bullet cartridge. Any opinions? I may be wrong though . I attached the last two pics for comparison I found online

This was found at cavalry site.

Yep it's a Spencer case, now go back and find some more. I went to a small site outside Boonsboro MD that had produced some Spencer cases. After looking around and finding none I had a brainstorm. Instead of pounding the already hunted ground I started climbing on the tops of the rock formations used as cover by Custer's dismounted troops. Sure enough, perfectly preserved fired Spencer cases began emerging from under the fine black soil on the rock outbreak tops formed by over a century's worth of decaying leaves. The first one I dug was so nice I thought it was brass from a old paper .410 shotgun shell until I checked for a center fire primer. Laying on the rock tops they were never stepped on and the limestone rocks buffered any acidity produced by acid rain or the decaying leaves. I gave some to my brother and reunited some with Spencer slugs for display. YMMV

I probably need to go across the street from this spot in the woods there and see what's in that area too. Expand from ground zero area. They marched through here . I don't know if they stopped . I don't think there was a camp they just kept going but they discarded some items. Things I did get here . Spencer carbine bullet, soldier fork, artillery chain, part of oil lamp and that shell casing , random buckles etc
