Special Order No. 112, Par. XIX was issued by the Adjutant & Inspector General's Officer at Richmond on May 9, 1863. The order concerns itself with the disbandment of the 1st Choctaw Battalion which was headquartered at Newton Station, Mississippi.
In paragraph XIX, it stated:
"The battalion of Choctaw Indians under command of Major Pierce, P. A. C. S. will immediately be mustered out of the service of The Confederate States, such of the men as have remained and are present for duty will be duly paid before being disbanded, the arms and accoutrements which were in possession of the battalion will be collected and turned over to the proper officers of the quarter master's department."
In an April 13, 1863 letter to Major Robert W. Memminger, Brig. General John Adams wrote:
"In view of all the facts, I felt constrained to say that, in my opinion, this Batt. Is worthless, + is a useless expense to the Government. The number is less than half the minimum number required for one company, + there is very little prospect of an increase. I would respectfully recommend that it be disbanded."
