Southeast Alabama

To really know you would have to read the Original Records for Confederate correspondence in southeast Alabama. While Northern Alabama had the most armed Unionist resistance to the Confederacy their were Unionist guerrillas in the wiregrass region. If their are any surviving newspapers of the area that are archieved that might be interesting say from mid 1863 onward. Their may be county historical societies in SE Alabama that would know plus any local universities or colleges in the region.
Most likley SE Alabama was not as anti Confederate as Southern Mississippi.

Google Southern Unionism essential civil war curriculum David Williams . Williams does a great outline of Unionist guerrilla and black resistance to the Confederacy. Williams does mention Unionist guerrillas and deserters in Southeast Alabama.
