Folks, I'm trying to learn about the cavalry actions (and subsequent infantry actions) just to the south of Big Round Top. I am reading Wittenberg's latest revised and expanded edition of Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Actions: Farnsworth's Charge, South Cavalry Field, and the Battle of Fairfield. I am having trouble following W's work at times. His map is inadequate for y finite mind.
He goes on to be critical of Andie Custer (Blue & Gray-Spring 2006). I reread her article. I must admit, her article confused the heck out of me as well. The only thing I can make of the whole situation is 1) both authors disagree as to the courses taken by the cavalry troops and 2) The charge was made without a game plan, or so it seems.
Has anyone else on this board had a problem trying to figure out the cavalry actions of that day? At the rate I am going, it will take me the better part of a half a year to understand what happened and the routes the cavalry took. I don't know. Maybe like Kilrain said, I must be a "peawit."
Any clarification would help immensely! Thanks in advance, folks!
