Soldier Photo Info Request

This image was posted on Facebook by an individual seeking more information on the Civil War soldier in the image. It has what appears to be a stamped(?) copper or brass frame with the patriotic motto "The Union Now And Forever". The image also looks like it was colorized a bit by the photographer.

I think it's fairly clear it is a Union soldier, but rank and branch of service are uncertain.

The image was found in a collection from upstate New York.

Branch is likely cavalry since he is holding a cavalry saber and wearing a cavalry saber belt.

The subject is a Federal cavalry enlisted man, likely a private since he doesn't have any chevrons. It sounds like you could use a primer on period photography; possibly you will find this old thread helpful:
