Like my first big Boy Scout camp, I got sent out to the other camps looking for a left handed smoke shifter. I caught on pretty quick though, the chuckling at the second or third camp gave it away. My poor buddy though got sent out for a glass hammer, he was gone for hours.
Being a tanner was a nasty business but those naturally tanned leather enjoyed a longevity not seen by today's chemically tanned leather. I suppose it's a good thing that Grant failed as a tanner. People stayed away from the tanneries b/c of the stench.
In one book for soldiers suggested rubbing soap on one's socks where the feet are sore. I second the South Union Mills suggestion, Wambaugh, White & Co. also has some socks listed.
I have two pairs of these, they are great! I wear them in all weather, even over the SUM cotton socks I also have two pairs of. They're comfortable in both winter and summer. A little itchy at first, but that goes away after one wear. Best socks available imo.
