Of the two GAR cemeteries in this state, both happen to be located in western Washington. That's not to say that there aren't other civil war veterans sprinkled all across our state, you can find them resting in pioneer and old soldiers home cemeteries from Seattle to Yakima, and all the quiet old towns in between. It's often easy to confine the American civil war -and the people that participated in it- to the epic battlefields of the east and south. However after the last shots were fired and the uniforms put away, many soldiers made the move westward.
The town I grew up in, Snohomish, happens to be the home of one of the two GAR cemeteries I mentioned.
It's actually a funny coincidence, because I had no idea when I was growing up that this cemetery had civil war veterans...even worse, I had VISITED this graveyard as a teen and somehow missed the large obelisk monument in the back.
Who knew that my civil war studies would bring me almost literally to my backyard!
Anyways, on this typical drizzly Washington weekend, I paid a visit to the veterans who decided to make Snohomish, their final resting place.

the unassuming, but nice Memorial tucked in the back of the cemetery.( it could use a scrubbing though!)
attached are a few photos of some Veteran graves . there are many more than this though!
