too bad i didn't have that idea
if they couldn't contain that machine they'd most likely needed to beg for federal troops.the cotton harvester would create a big bonanza for those planters who survived it and obviously for some yankees. if slavery had survived till that machine showed up the decline of the south would have been much worse than the one during and after the war as there is no time to adjust to the idea. johnny slaver would have breakfast, read in the papers about the machine and get a phonecall from his banker:
'we need to talk' - 'what's up?' - 'don't know how to say that politely but you're bankrupt'
as a matter of fact that'll be a great idea for an alternate time-stream novel*

* edit: of course one should eradicate black friday and the new deal from the timeline which could be achieved by the us not going to war in 1917, the world war (no need to number them) ending about 1921 in a stalmate or somesuch to see capitalsm unfold at its best.
