Six unidentified Federal Cavalrymen pose with drawn sabers. The sergeant alone (standing, left) is wearing gloves. The man seated at left, looks like he might be wearing blue corporal's chevrons. At least 5 of the men wears a star-shaped badge on his vest lapel -- is this likely to be a Corps Badge (12th, or 20th, probably), or might it have some other significance? Their large size and consistent placement make me suspect the latter. Some kind of Provost badge, maybe?

with permission, from Ron Coddington.

I thought 12th or 20th too but those badges were just about the size of a penny weren't they? They were made from buttons or silver coins. I have lots of pics of provost badges but they're 5 pointed stars with a banner wrap most of the way around the star. They look like Arizona ranger badges, or even Sheriff 5 point stars in this picture. I'm at a loss on this one.

I checked the listing of the units of the XX Corps in 1865 {Battles and LEaders of the Civil War Vol IV}
Infantry but no cavalry listed.
In Francis Lord "Civil War Collectors Encylopedia" ..p.137 is a picture of a 8 pointed Star badge of a Provost Marshal Guard...
