Single or double

Line officers, generally Captain and below were to wear single breasted and Field officers Major and above wore double, in the Union.

The CSA originally had double breasted frocks prescribed for all ranks, it was the collar insignia and button positioning that differentiated the ranks. Later, shell jackets were authorized as to save speed and cloth. Officers continued to purchase their own uniforms whether frock or shell, which continued to follow the general uniform code.
