'Silent Sentinels' still on guard

Given the recent events involving the removal of grave memorials, defacing of monuments, protests, flaggings, counter protests, and general foolishness from people with axes to grind, I am greatly saddened by what I see from both sides. I think we need to take a step back as a society and remember what happened 150 years ago with a little more civility and a lot more common sense. We all share a common history as Americans. It is a complex history with many disturbing and often painful facets. We can, I hope, discuss and disagree about these complex issues in our history without resorting to our base emotions. If we, as Americans, can not do so, then I fear we have learned nothing from the war.

When I walk past a Civil War monument and see the "'Silent Sentinel" standing guard atop it, I am reminded how far we have come as a nation. I am proud of those brave men on both sides.

I'm not sure what else to say. I guess I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Thanks,
Kepi
