Should the South have seceded?

One of Auburn University's coaches once famously said that hindsight is "50-50." Most of us see it as 20-20, but I digress. Two questions:

1) Based on what the South knew in 1860 and 1861, was secession really necessary?

2) If the South knew then what we know now, would it have seceded?

In your response, please indicate which side your ancestors supported.
