Shorthand for Parrotts?

In a journal from the siege of Charleston by the Union, the author is counting the number of mortars and rifles in all of the batteries.

As he mentions "9-30 Pdr." it looks like "Patts" was inserted above it. There is definitely a crossing of two "t"s, so it's not "Parrs".

Does anyone know if that's how they may have referred to the Parrotts?

Yeah, from the context I'd say Parrotts. Also, I'm taking up a collection to buy a time machine to send that guy a friggin' typewriter.

I concur, probably Patts is his shorthand for Parrotts. He spells out Wiards for another type of rifled gun, probably because the word is short enough for him.

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it was a Monty Python skit.

Notice the lined paper the note was written on. Just like today's lined paper for school/college.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

The complete message? I can figure out much of it...I think.

It's basically a count of the guns in place in the batteris.

"At O.C. [Officer's Call?] today the -- Batteries -- nine 30-pdr Parrotts, four 20-pdr Parrotts, five 10-in siege mortars [are in?] Apl (?), and two 30-pdr Parrotts -- six 10-pdr Parrott rifles.
At O.C. today are in Batteries This morning -- five 8-in siege mortars, two 30-pdr Parrott rifles, six 10-pdr Parrott rifles, four 3-in rifles, and two [blank] pdr Wiard Rifles, five 10-in siege mortars, in all 27 field or siege rifled guns and 15 siege mortars amounting to 42 pieces.

This morning the following Batteries were following pieces were in --(?) [place?] on Right.
On Left
in all making 27 field and siege Rifled (?) pieces and 15 siege mortars / in all 42 pieces"
