Greetings all! I wanted to ask a question as I cannot seem to find an answer elsewhere--but if it has been asked and answered before please forgive me. I am getting an impression together for the 160th Shiloh--and let me just say to start of how excited my boys and I are for this event. A few guys from my unit are going so we decided to tag along. Though we usually portray late war ANV, I have adjusted my impression in an attempt to be more accurate for early 1862. I know it will still be imperfect but that just reflects my own imperfect nature!

So, the question I have centers around my accouterments. I will be carrying my 1816 Maynard conversion with my Magee and George russet accouterments. I usually wear the cartridge box on my belt without a sling but have experienced some sagging--I have added holes to my belt and that has helped to cinch it tighter--but would a plain, non-tarred canvas sling be appropriate for the time period and impression? I have one I was planning on 'painting' for my late war kit but wondered if I could leave it plain and use it for Shiloh. The russet leathers would look good with it--though my bayonet scabbard is black, it will just have to be that way lol! Thanks all for the help and once I get everything sorted will post pictures. If anyone else is going--I will see you there!

I have no idea about the accouterments but wish to express my appreciation that you are participating in the 160th Anniversary event at Shiloh. Someone who knows will likely be along shortly to provide knowledgeable advice. I look forward to seeing a photo of your impression and thank you again for participating in the commemoration of the 160th at Shiloh.

I'm not going for 160, but Shiloh is one of my possibilities this summer. I just finished Shelby Foote's Shiloh, and I'm currently reading Winston Groom's Shiloh, 1862. I look forward to seeing photos.

Hope you have a great time, give us a report. I don't see anything wrong with using a plain white sling although leather I think would be better. I have a dumb question regarding your belt sag issue. Are you wearing it high enough? Should be over your hips with the buckle at your naval. I see so many guys trying to wear their waste belt where we wear our jeans today and it never stays up. If it's snug and high it should stay up fine.

Thanks all! That is a good point

That is a great point about belt placement. I haven't done an event since 2020 with my cartridge box on the waist belt as the few I have done I was wearing my black leathers. I get kitted up this weekend and run around the yard and see how it does!
