Recently went to the Texas Civil War Museum and saw the flag for the 2nd Texas inf with the battle honor for Shiloh. Does anyone know if this is the flag they carried in the Battle of Shiloh or was this flag given to the regiment after the battle? Thx

Do you happen to have a photo of the flag in the museum? I haven't ever visited this particular museum, so I really can't say. But if it has Shiloh honors on the flag it more than likely could not have been placed there until after the battle.

I know the Shiloh would have been added after the battle, but I am not sure when the unit was issue this particular style of flag. I thought most of these types of flags were issued in the following months after Shiloh, but I am sure some of the regiments would have had this type of flag going into Shiloh. Thx

From what I've remembered the 2nd Texas carried a 1st National and a Texas state flag at Shiloh so this one wouldn't have been there. I did a quick search to make sure I was correct and came across an old thread on another forum claiming a 2nd Texas battle flag in a museum was a known fake, there was no picture so don't know if it's the one you pictured or not. You may find this old thread from here on the subject interesting. https://civilwartalk.com/threads/2nd-texas-infantry.92605/#post-761983

The flag carried by the 2nd Texas in Keith Rocco's painting "Key to Cornith".

In the thread I posted the link to apparently that was a rare mistake by Mr. Rocco, that flag was actually the flag of the 2nd Texas Cavalry. It seems the concensus of sources agree though that they carried a similar Texas state flag and a 1st national flag at Shiloh or possibly a Hardee pattern flag, the solid blue flag with a white disc in the center.

The museum believes the 2nd Texas flag they have was carried at Corinth when Rogers was killed. Supposedly he was carrying the flag when he was killed. They also had Roger's sword. Shame the museum is closing at the end of the year.

A tidbit about the uniforms worn by the 2nd Texas at Shiloh. From what I've read they were issued undyed uniforms just prior to leaving Cornith for Shiloh.A federal prisoner taken at Shiloh referred to them as Hellcats in graveclothes.
