The following summary from the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle, (2 Dec. 1864), doesn't sound all that outraged.

In most references Sherman looked the other way about the looters,some but few may have been published but the majority were not.remember this is a southern newspaper so of course they would say the union soldiers were punished.it is propaganda for a defeated population.
 
Surprised someone hasn't made a tour t-shirt for Sherman's March....or maybe they have and I haven't seen it

Perhaps. But wouldn't you expect the propaganda to exaggerate the threat, thereby building up the determination to resist? That's what besieged governments usually do. Then, maybe it's defeatist propaganda. My purpose was just to point out that the outrage and bitterness was much less here than is often heard today.
