Shermans March

Camp Asylum was for officers most of their men were sent to Andersonville
That is correct. My ancestor William B. Phillips was Adjutant of the 2nd. Pennsylvania 2nd. Heavy Artillery "Provisionals". A fellow officer from his regiment, Capt. John Norris weighed 95 lbs. at the time of his release from Camp Asylum. It was bad, but not as bad as Andersonville.

I've changed my opinion somewhat of Sherman.

You Yanks don't go and gloat on your newest conversion, yet. I still think some of what was done in South Carolina was unnecessary and vindictive towards the wrong people. Too many poor people lost everything they had in his wake.

What really gets to me is when people rejoice over the destruction of private property. Millwood, the home of the War of 1812 patriot, Wade Hampton II was burned, even though Confederate general Wade Hampton III didn't own it. It belonged to his sisters.

It happened, Sherman may or may not have ordered it. Just don't gloat over it. Wade Hampton II served in the War of 1812 for awhile in Vermont. He requested Vermont militia to help on his campaign but was refused. What a slap in the face for a man to serve his country so far from home and be refused the service of the very people he sought to protect. I'm glad he died before the ACW so he didn't have to see his home burned. Shame on the soldiers that thought it proper to burn it.

Okay I'm over it.

WHAT? Now wait a minute, where is dvrmte and what have you done to him? "Produce the body!" Oh, wait, President Lincoln has suspended habeas corpus. Well, no matter, WHO ARE YOU and what have you done to our scrappy rebel, dvrmte? I DEMAND to know!

Whew! Thank Goodness! dvrmte, you'll never know just how upset I was with whoever uttered that first line in your above post! Glad to have you back!

Yup. Lots and lots of people lost everything. That was the purpose. When the giant is kicked, one cannot take it back with an "excuse me." Somebody is gonna get stomped.

You don't wanna get stomped? Don't wake the giant.

Although, I certainly can understand the feelings that Union troops had towards the state of S. Carolina and blaming her for the war, Im also saddened for the loss of historical property and the property of innocent people whose only crime was living in that state...

:o The northwest corner of Washington Co. NY. is named Hampton where it wraps around the southwest corner of Lake Champlain.
I believe I have 1st person documentation that supports dvrmte (don't faint Union Blue), on the lack of support from Vermont including ancestors for Gen Wade's endeavor. Capt. Gideon P Warren Green Mountain Boys, who settled in this town, penned a couple pages in agreement.
