Sherman Sherman Was Here!

The South Carolina State House is a granite building topped with a copper dome. However it has some other features adorning it , 6 bronze stars to mark where Union artillery struck the building during General Sherman's assault on Columbia. They remain there even to this day, despite two major renovations.

I think it's nice that the state has marked and preserved them in that way. There's a cannon ball still lodged in one of the columns of the court house in Lexington, Missouri. Not a state house, but still.... It's marked, too. They are quite proud of it.

The Saluda Mill was a facility were Confederate clothing was manufactured as well as Bayonets & other supplies.
Sherman crossed the Broad at this location after his troops fought a breif skirmish with CS Sharpshooters.

( These photos have been found through Google with the
simple search of Saluda Mill. I didn't take these photos,
but instead fell in love with them. )

Cottontown-
Logan's 15th corps entered Columbia through Cottontown.
Cottontown housed all the city's cotton products in a series of factories.
Confederate sharpshooters put ap a light resistance while citizens & government officials escaped Columbia Via the Charlotte & Columbia R.R.

After seeing these photos, plus those of Atlanta and Richmond, I can say that I am thankful to God that my town was neither shelled nor burned. A lot of terrible things happened in my small town (a significant river port during the CW) and big armies moved through on at least three occasions. But we never got burned out.

Even if that had happened, I still would have grown up in a lovely old river town. I just wouldn't have evidence of so many antebellum buildings--possibly including the house from where I write these words. As things are, I am thankfully surrounded by antebellum beauty on virtually every street within walking distance of my house. That, my friends, is a true joy for me.
