Obviously Sherman's quarrels with the press are legendary and there are books just dedicated to this topic.

While reading a library book I curiously found in a collection, I came across this account from Sherman's Civil War. Selected and edited from his personal memoirs, with a foreword by Earl Schenck Miers

At least it can be said of Sherman that he didn't gossip about Boynton behind his back. Boynton was trying to sow discord like a schoolboy getting between the two more popular boys -- probably looking for a scoop or a reaction for his newspaper.

Well, Sherman knew what he was up to and called him out in person. This thing made me chuckle.

Boynton then lobbied to get Sherman court-martialed for conduct unbecoming of an officer, or something like that. But it went nowhere.

I think a lot of people at the time agreed with Sherman's description of Boynton.
