Sherman was commander of the Department of the Cumberland from October to November 1861. Do any Sherman experts out there know roughly how many troops he had under his command during that time?
 
Sherman was commander of the Department of the Cumberland from October to November 1861. Do any Sherman experts out there know roughly how many troops he had under his command during that time?

Sherman reported (using estimates for some units) an aggregate present and absent of just under 50,000 on 11/10/1861. See OR I, vol 4 page 349. His effective force was probably more like 30,000.
