Mrs. Irene Curtis-Rucker set her eyes on Phil Sheridan. And in due course her 19 year old daughter was seen regularly riding in an open carriage with the Civil War hero. It could have been a situation in which the parents, Daniel and Irene Rucker thought it best that the couple get married ASAP, as they were clearly enraptured. Sheridan's life, in the end, was a romance.
Halleck/Rucker/Sheridan, small world.

Irene Rucker was 22 years younger than Phil. They ended up having four children including a set of twins. Mary, Irene, Louise and Philip Jr. Philip Jr. ended up being a Major in the Army. He graduated from West Point in 1902 and had served on the General Staff. He served as an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt from 1905 to 1907, being relieved from duty at his own request, moved by an ambition to be put on active duty in a regiment. He died on Feb. 17, 1918 at the age of 37.
