She Painted A-Tinted-Lee...

"Tinted for the benefit of the Memorial Church at Lexington, Va by Mary Custis Lee."

This is a wonderful piece of work by Mary Custis Lee... hand tinted by her for a charity event benefiting a church in Lexington. She has tinted the General's cheeks red and his hair and beard a blueish grey. The image carries the Lee Gallery imprint which was located in Richmond.

From what little reading I've done about her, she was definitely an accomplished artist! She was mostly confined to a chair by arthritis, so art was her main outlet.

Maybe it was even done by his daughter Mary Custis Lee, because his wife's full name was actually Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee ...

Edit: I have found that photo once more on the internet. It was done by his wife, she obviously did several of them for fundraising. Seems to have been great demand for them.

The beard looks a bit weird, but I think over time the grey color might have faded into some kind of blue.
