Shannon's Scouts

I am wondering if anyone here has a good working knowledge of the material available on Shannon's Scouts during Sherman's March. Specifically there is an article that appeared in Civil War Times Illustrated (1983) that contained a letter that described the scouts activities. I have that article. I happened to run across another version of that letter/journal that contained more information than the CWT article. It is here: http://jeffreystayton.com/sherman-s-march.html. I contacted the guy and he states that there is a more detailed journal that contains this extra detail, but he can't remember what or where it is since it has been 10 years since he has dealt with it. I cannot find it on the web if it exists. I do see that at Rice University there are the Shannon-Scott papers (but I'm in Ga). Does anyone know of a diary for Enoch D John? He is the letter writer and references a diary. Any help would be appreciated!

Here is a link to a website that has a selection of dates taken from John's diary:

Just do a search for his name on the site - it is "published in the March 8, 1865 issue of the Galveston
Weekly, in the form of a letter from Enoch D. John (LETTER), a Scout himself, which included several page from his journal." It spans 14 Nov 64 to 4 Dec 64.

Their written story implies this cavalry unit was great but I argue why? They were going around Sherman's army's March to the sea and picking off union foraging parties. They acted more like bushwhakers then cavalry men. You can said murders...

Thanks for the replies. I ran across these links before and none have the additional "diary" details from my original post/letter, if they in fact really exist. I believe they have to be in some library or archives (such as Rice University). Unfortunately I won't be able to make that research tripto find out. Thanks

GMSorrel, I just sent Rice University an inquiry on the Enoch D. John diary.

GMSorrel, here is the response from Rice University:

"Thank you for your email. The Woodson Research Center does not have the Civil War diary of Enoch D. John in our collections. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate a mention to the diary in any other repositories."

Thanks Legion Para for doing this. It is much appreciated! Disappointed that the diary is still located. Maybe it will turn up someday.
