Antietam is a beautiful farm land that is not very large, and when you add in the South Mountain battlefield, yet was the bloodiest single day battle of the Civil War.

David
I had the privilege of visiting that battlefield 29 years ago. I just missed the 17th by a few days but it still gave me "goosebumps".

Around 2pm the same day an explosion caused by a spark from a wagon wheel devastated the laboratory of the Allegheny Arsenal in Pittsburgh, Pa. The explosion killed 78 workers, mostly young women. The youngest recorded was 15 years old. 54 of the victims were unable to be identified.
I was busy with my 86 year old mother yesterday and forgot to post about that.
