Secession Right, Confederacy Wrong?

I heard an interesting comment from a teacher about modern opinions on secession. He said an increasing number of his students believe unilateral secession is a right due to the principle of self-determination.

However, they also consider the Southern states secession in 1860-1861 to be for the wrong reasons (slavery).

When I raised the issue of unilateral secession being untenable because there are details that have to be negotiated, this teacher said their students don't care about the consequences.
