While looking for information on the uniform worn by the men of the first company of Louisiana Foot Rifles, under the command of Captain Henry St. Paul (later designated company A of the 7th Louisiana Infantry Battalion), I read that they wore 'Sebastopol shoes' made of alligator leather.
What kind of shoes were Sebastopol shoes? Thank you

The Daily True Delta, New Orleans, Nov. 1, 1859.

Probably an alternative spelling of 'Sevastopol'. Perhaps shoes like the French Zouaves wore at Sevastopol during the Crimean War.

Here are French Zouaves boots/shoes in Crimea

They look like pretty normal laced ankle boots to me.

*at this time 'shoes' seems to refer to any low, lace-up boot rather than a shoe (bootee, brogans), while 'boot' refers to ankle, calf or knee boots without lacing.

These are 'drummer boy's shoes' from 1863

Shoes, bootees or brogans?

Looking through the variations online, it may be that 'sebastopol shoes' were ROUND-toed ankle boots not square 'New York style'. Crocodile skin is perfectly possible, but doubtful if they would last long in the field.

Is that hole due to battle damage or something else?
