Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my senior project with you all. I wrote a manual for newcomers in the hobby, I myslef am not quite yet a veteran but I wanted to share what limited knowledge I had to help new guys through the first weekend. As it stands this version is the one that will be graded however I am interested in your comments, criticism and changes you propse. I'd like to see this become useful and want to see it through so if anything thing needs added let me hear about it. Thanks! Here's The Link If anyone experiences problems with the link i've also attached the file

First check with your reenactment unit for advice.
1-shirts
2-trousers
3-bayonet and scabbard.

Otherwise I would say a very well written project. Will you be wearing your uniform into the classroom with all of your acoutrements?

Thanks, Will edit that when I get the chance. I will be wearing a suit to present but that's in May when we get the grade. I want to demo my uniform at some point but that's unlikely right now. Hopefully I'll be able to at some point

I have graded sr projects. Why not wear your uniform? Without the gun of course.

As much as I'd like to, I only have ten minutes to present, I wouldn't be able to discuss the uniform at all. The manual is Just one component of my project, I will mostly be discussing a research paper I wrote amongst other things. I'm also presenting in blocks of about three hours, it's simply a lot of effort and will most likely be a distraction. A suit is more appropriate for the event. Quite frankly I've also been having issues with my trousers lately and most likely wouldn't be able to wear them

You don't have to cover your uniform. I don't know why sr advisers say wear a suit or dress.

To All,

If you didn't already know it, csemo is my grandson and I am the grandfather he mentions that has the hankering for that begins with "Mc" and ends with "Donalds" food that caused him such great distress during his first reenactment.

I really hope that all of the membership here will read his project and give freely of their advice, comments and praise, if you feel such is warranted after reading his work. Being his grandfather I must admit to being somewhat biased at his genius at producing this project which I think should be more widely disseminated to the young folk with the idea it could him induce them into reenacting themselves.

I am also asking him to consider putting this project in as an article in the Camp Chase Gazette or the Civil War Monitor magazines.

If there are any forum members who have experience with submitting articles to the above two publications, I would appreciate any advice or direction you could point my grandson in so that he might consider doing such.

Again, any advice or comments all of you could give would certainly be appreciated by him, and by me also.

Sincerely,
Unionblue

A well written and lively piece that should be of help to the "green as grass" newbie to re-enacting. Your stating that you are relatively new to it yourself put me at ease while I read. I felt like I could make a mistake here and there without feeling out of step, yet your experiences are a valuable lesson for an up and coming enthusiast. Speaking as a non re-enactor, I would be more relaxed at my first event after reading your article. Well done and keep at it. You will do well not only in the hobby but in writing as well!

Well written. A few minor recommendations.

-Many of us know the term "period correct" but your readers who are new or never been in the hobby may not understand the significance of the term. I would explain it. I scanned the paper quickly as it is late so if you did explain it...never mind.

-I believe you say the P-58 Enfield. I think you mean the P-53 Enfield.

-A cook-off? Remember your reader may not be familiar with firearms or black powder intricacies.

-Why should a beginner be in the front rank? I would explain the two lines of infantry formation and the issue of recruits not having their gun in the right place for the front rank soldier.

If at all possible I would use some original pictures to illustrate how the gear looked and was worn to further your worded description.

I hope these recommendations help and are meant in a constructive way with the up most respect sir. Again, it is a well written document. Bully for you and good luck!

I think I'm pretty similar in age to you since I'm 16- since I'm young, seems like I'm kind of the target audience and I really enjoyed that- even though I'm not a re-enactor and can't give you any practical help or advice. It's interesting and really accessible too, adored the additional note section at the end, which made it personal and you don't feel talked down to or anything, it's a little like having a good friend walk you through it because of the conversational style of the piece. I also could see my friends- who aren't as interested in this period of history- reading that and understanding it. Hope you get an A on your manual.

Well written though I agree with the suggestion above that illustrations would help like for each of the steps for loading the rifle and the positions of drill. Unless your teacher asked you to single space, it is much easier to mark, if double spaced. When you use phrases like for example, hopefully, etc. at the beginning of a sentence, a comma comes between that phrase and the rest of the sentence. Even though your grammar is pretty good, I would suggest having some one and not just computer check it over for grammar and spelling. I would also suggest that for the number steps of loading a rifle to list it out with numbers like you did for the commands just to break up that one big paragraph in that section. Paragraphing would be helpful in some of the other sections too. I would use a more modern word than accountremounts in section 2 and for the final section, when I saw the word notes, I assumed it was going to be footnotes. So, maybe, an other word would be better though if you used sources make sure you include them in the bibliography. I am not a renactor, so I can't critique it from that point of view. I did enjoy reading it and learned a lot though about the hobby.

Thanks for sharing this. It covers a lot of information that a beginner would want to know and is very easy to read. I agree with BrrBRRR that it would benefit from better paragraphing as long blocks of text are really tricky to read.

Also, I like your story in part VII and wonder if it work as an opening passage.

I regard it as my duty as a private to poke fun at officers.

Yes! Sergeants, on the other hand... :)

By the way, superb tintype!

That was well done. My only critique would be that some of the paragraphs are very long. I recommend splitting some of them into 1-3 separate paragraphs.

Okay everyone, I just got home and finished reading what everyone said here since I first posted yesterday. I want to thank you all for the criticism and suggestions. Hopefully, I will have all changes done by Sunday as I am busy until then. Thanks again, just wanted to address the group as a whole. I will be responding to everyone individually sometime soon.
