Schenkl Round

I collect Ordnance and found a nice Schenkl round to add to my civil war pieces. I have a dug round and wanted a complete round. It one of my favorites. Here is the new round. It is the 3 inch Shenkl shell that came out of the Col. Biemeck collection. I hope you enjoy. Vaughn

This is a rare bird indeed, one with the paper mache' sabot intact. The drawback to this clever design was that an exposure to moisture would cause these sabots to expand/ and not fit the gun's bore or disintegrate.

Besides the fuse modification, Confederates also placed an iron pin through the tail to hold a wooden sabot on. The South must have thought a great deal of the Schenkls to make those changes to them for their reuse. The Confederates also made their own limited version of a Schenkl Round in Marshall, Texas (I believe) and they are only found in the Trans Mississippi area. 3 Confederate Schenkls: L; 3.80 Shell, M: Confederate 3" Schenkl Conversion, R: 3.67 Schenkl Bolt
