The Providence Horse Guards, were a militia group of company size approximately 120 personnel. Their uniform in 1861 consisted of a scarlet coated faced with light blue, yellow lace and brass scales; sky blue pants with yellow stripe; helmet covered with light blue cloth, brass bound and white horsehair plume. Upon entering US service they were issued standard regulation US cav clothing, in 1869 they reverted to their pre war uniform.

During the war they were brigaded with:
  • Providence Marine Corps Artillery
  • Providence Artillery (re designated the Burnside Zouaves)
  • Mechanics Rifles
  • Providence First Light Infantry
  • National cadets
  • Woonsocket Guards
  • Scituate Rifles
  • Pawtucket Light Guard
  • Slocum Light Guard
  • Rhode Island Guards
Post war they were utilized as a ceremonial unit and faded away as most militia units of the day, becoming incorporated into the Rhode Island National Guard.
