Save the cat!

My cat is not in the least afraid of fireworks or thunder but every time someone fires any sort of gun in the neighborhood he growls and his hair stands up. How does he know what those sounds signify? We've owned him since he was a kitten and he's never even been in the same room with a gun since we don't own one at present. I don't think he's reading the behavior of the humans because my husband and I mostly shrug and make a mental note of the time when we hear gunfire, in case it turns out to be important later.

Cats are more territorial than loyal to individual people. Taking one on a trip with an army sounds like an iffy proposition. It may have stayed during the time the army was encamped then promptly returned to the place when the army moved on.
Tucker is terrified of thunder. He once got caught outside during a hailstorm, one with those very jagged stones, and from then on it's under the bed when a thunderstorm rolls through.

A cat is an odd mascot, too because they don't tend to follow along like dogs do, right? Must have been a great cat, deciding these were his people- The End. Love to find more of the story somewhere!
You know my wife and I found out you do not pick a cat for a pet. A cat picks you. We have raised Dilio (Dee Lee Oh) from a runt cat who came up and laid on the wife's feet. He was an inside cat until the little man got his whiskers so to speak. Until he became a young adult and just had to be out side. He is an awesome outside cat, he stays near but he goes and does what boy cats do. He plays with us outside just like he did when he was inside. He is learning to hunt. We have the only cat that I know off that plays fetch. We have it up on facebook, He fetches a teething ring and will bring it back to have you throw it again. Yep you just go pick out a cat......They pick you IMHO

That's what I like about them. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but a cat chooses you and not the other way around.

Yep that is very true we have cat, dogs, and rabbit. LOL. all have Cherokee names. We started with Selu and Gadu which is corn and bread. Selu died so we got tuya which is beans. Now we have bread and beans. lol. We had Wesa whis is Cat she ran away now we have Dilio which is socks but if you drop the o it means skunk and sometime that black cat with the white sock can be a Dili a little stinker. Last the rabbit Ganu which means fast like a bullet. So didn't mean to get off subject.

I been researching cats during the war. Have found many famous cats that were on ships and with army but these all either earlier then Civil War or after.

It is know General Lee liked cats. he mentions them in his letters to family. Does any of the Lee experts know if he had a cat with him during the war?

Off the topic a bit, I just finished reading Eric Larson's book about the sinking of the Luthisana in WWI and one of things, he mentions is the ship cat abandoned ship before the boat left New York for its last voyage. So, maybe it is true about them sensing trouble ahead of time. Or it could be that guns are like vacuum cleaners. Our cat, Pumpkin, fears it so much that he much rather be downstairs with the dogs who he also fears than upstairs with the vacuum. Unlike, Bubba who thinks he is a dog as he sleeps with, grooms and plays with them. He is also the same size as our largest dog at 20 pounds.
