I was in Savannah today and made the effort to see the monument. It stands 48 feet tall. Put up in 1875. However, it was renamed and rededicated in 2018 to be called The Civil War Memorial.

Excellent photo. I saw it last year. Most all of the monuments , including this one are in need of cleaning updating. Same for the many squares. One can only imagine how this must have looked the day it was unveiled.

Interesting.

Was the rededication/renaming in name only - or did the monument need/get a bit of reworking?

I can't tell - did the CS beltplate get smoothed over, placard text changed/etc?
According to a Google search, a plaque was added saying it was dedicated to all the Civil War Dead. The original plaque saying to the Confederate Dead is still there. CSA is still on the beltplate.

Ah, got you.

Apologies - didn't mean for you to have to do the google search for me - I thought you were posting so as to show an 'after' and you knew the changes made.

Beautiful monument, regardless of 'side' originally honored.
