This is a sweet cocktail that be good for Holiday parties. If you can't find black currant juice, use cranberry or pomegranate.
Currant Shrub
2 cups sugar
2 cups juice
1/2 to 1 cup brandy
Boil the sugar and juice for 10 minutes; a light boil is best. When it is cool, add 1/2 to 1 cup brandy for every cups of liquid. Use one part shrub to three parts ice and water. Serves 20.
The Preston-Johnson family is another old Kentucky family. General Preston married Margaret Wickliffe, and in 1883 their son, Robert Wickliffe Preston married Sarah Brant McDowell, granddaughter of Virginia governor and congressman James McDowell. The Sarah McDowell Preston series contains correspondence, financial documents, diaries, address books, cards, programs and recipes. The recipes are handwritten on loose pages and are dated in the 1800s.
