Today December 4th is Saint Barbara's Day and Saint Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen. So, all you lovers of the iron maidens out there; go out and have a blast.

I have a small medallion of Saint Barbara on my keyring. Many years ago I took part in a Saint Barbara's day celebration when I was a member of "Turner's Battery," Company C, 1st Mississippi Light Artillery. The celebration took place in the home of Confederate General Stephen D. Lee in Columbus, Mississippi.

I believe that The Great Martyr was one of the saints who were demoted in 1969. "Sic transit gloria mundi"!

Here's to you Saint Barbra, demoted or not !

And today is also my great grandfather's 200 birthday. Heres to you to great grandpa, wherever you are !

John

My Dad was in Artillery in WW2. I obtained all the Morning Reports for his time overseas: Dec 1943 - Aug 1945. Everyone for every day for each Battery and Med Detachment. At least 7,000 images.

Using these MR's, I was able to locate where Lt Neubel took several photos (greatly reduced here) of gun crews in Battery "C". Note the 105mm Howitzer behind them.

The firing batteries were located near Calanco, which was not a town but probably a villa. C. Del Chin was also another farm, just off this map, where an infantry battalion had their HQ. It received direct hits from a 120mm mortar on 20 Feb 1945. My father was with a forward observation team for Battery "B" and had just walked out of that HQ when it was hit. The infantry was holding positions on and around Monte Grande(99.8-32.5) just a little further north.

And a trusty P38 can opener to boot.
