We took a family trip today up to Linville Caverns in North Carolina, so we could enjoy the caves and the fall foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While driving we passed through the NC town of Rutherfordton, where I saw and had to stop and enjoy the Confederate monument on the Courthouse grounds.

There was also a Civil War connection in Linville Caverns. The first big open room in the caves at the time of the Civil War was the first place where the stream flowing through the caverns had some dry land, and it was here that deserters hid at one point and built a hearth for a fire to keep warm and cook their food. They would do some work for the locals repairing shoes, if I remember what the tour guide told me, and they were only eventually found because someone saw the smoke from their fire going up through the fissures in the ground above the hearth.
