For a different twist on the General's favorite cake, I thought I'd share this lemony Bundt recipe. It has its origins in an 1879 cookbook titled Housekeeping in Old Virginia. Believed to be a favorite of the Civil War general, most sources date the first written version of Robert E. Lee Cake to 1879. Since General Lee died in 1870, it's likely the original was made to honor him.

In all seriousness, bundt cake is my all time favorite birthday cake. Mother or my grandmother would make this cake for my birthday every year along with homemade vanilla and fresh strawberry ice cream made by hand with a machine over a hundred years old.
