Chigg has pulled a number of CW rifles from the rivers and is very knowledgeable in preservation of all relics. His Youtube link has his Instagram and Facebook info to contact. Heck he may have even done a vid on preservation of a rifle, he's done other preservation vids. Pardon the pun but ...Killer find !!

Watched some Aquachigger videos, and found one where he discovered a CW- era rifle. But his was not in nearly as good a condition.

So I'll share my ignorance… and sincerely hope to not offend.

But is this legit? What's the backstory? How is this weapon still intact?

Definitely looks legit for a water find with my experience in recovering fresh water relics. Fresh water preserves relics well

It's legit as far as I can tell. It was about 30' deep covered in mud and clay. Popped it loose with a magnet after two passes.
The wood is hard and intact .

Keep the wood wet. Do not let it dry out until you have a good idea of what to do next. If possible, in a tank of clean neutral (not acid or alkaline) water. if the wood dries out, it will almost certainly crack and split.
