Richmond?

At full resolution. The columned building here is the Virginia State House, acting Capitol of the Confederacy.

What is 'telling' to me that it is correct being Richmond is the equestrian statue of George Washington, used as part of the CSA Great Seal once it was voted through the CSA Congress. This "statue" is in the photo near the church steeple and need to enlarge it, as it looks like a rippling flag otherwise. Richmond has several 'branches' of waterways around the Capitol Building. The Geo. Washington equestrian statue is rather unique and IF there is another state Capitol with one near identical pose--then perhaps it will be the factor in identification.

Now the original photograph has similarities yet--- needs more digging by everybody.

I did a reverse image search and found this Richmond-based blog, and they agree it's not their town, although there are rough geographical similarities.

This stereoview at LoC is identified as Richmond, Virginia, but I don't think it is. The church on the hill is not St. Paul's Episcopal -- the steeple is wrong, as are the number of columns. Thoughts?

Yes, I thought about St. Paul' in Richmond, but the number of columns is different and St. Paul's has a second row.

Been looking at the three arch bridge... via google search...

Rather interesting with several possibilities. If there wasn't such a 'capital' building such as the one in the picture which suggests that is is a 'capitol' building; it would look proper for the valley of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

I posted this on my blog, and a reader from Virginia noted that the prominent structure on the hill looks a lot like the Old Northampton County Courthouse in Easton, Pennsylvania. It sure does. Perhaps more indicative, the structure immediately to the left of it matches the original entrance to the Northampton County Prison, next door. The prison was completed in 1871, which would date this image to sometime after that. If this identification is correct, and I believe it is, this view is looking roughly southwest from the hill where part of Lafayette College now stands, overlooking Bushkill Creek and Highway 22, the Lehigh Valley Thruway.

Ha! I wasn't going to say ' Easton ', but WAS going to ask if anyone had investigated Pennsylvania- as ridiculous as it sounds, I know, it just LOOKS like a PA town. Go ahead and laugh, there really is just no backing that statement up. Of course, anywhere lovely I'm going to feel would be PA.

I will agree with this conclusion. The evidence is the Googlearth image showing the presumed location of the camera. The creek and bridge in the foreground are shown and the angle of view corresponds with the image. Nice detective work Mr. Hall. Such a fun thread! Someone call the LoC!
