Richmond?

This stereoview at LoC is identified as Richmond, Virginia, but I don't think it is. The church on the hill is not St. Paul's Episcopal -- the steeple is wrong, as are the number of columns. Thoughts?

Pretty sure that image is floating around here somewhere but it never hurts to have an extra!

Wait!!! I am not so sure now! Andy, your drawing shows the spire in the middle of the building, as does my photo. Your OP has the spire toward the end of the building! And the columns don't match.

I dunno, that could be the same building just from a different angle.

Richmond, same general angle but closer. Listed as being taken from Gambles Hill. Note church spire to the left in the image, and no spire on the columned building. I hope I am not confusing anyone. I do get over eager sometimes!

The capitol building in Nashville has eight columns on the front, plus the columned side galleries. The structure in the original photo appears to have have 6 columns in the front and no side columns. I don't think it's Nashville. Just my opinion:smile:

Agree; doesn't look like Nashville, at least not that particular building. At the very least, that river is way too small to be the Cumberland!

Anybody explore "Petersburg?" ....if it was prior to Richmond's fall, it might be that the recorder was tardy...and if not Petersburg, might have been enroute, e.g. Charles City, Virginia ...

I looked for some pictures of Petersburg when this thread started but I only found a few. None had a similar building but that just might mean I didn't find the right photo collection!
I do wonder if Mr. Hall ever found, definitively, the location of the photo in the OP.
