While in Richmond visiting the grand new Museums of CW and the well-manicured Hollywood Confederate Cemetery, perhaps take time to visit two other heritage sites honoring those actually more affected by the vagaries of Southern history than anyone else who had lived in that city. But don't expect anything like the Hollywood Cemetery experience; and don't be shocked. These are all but paved over, a difference attributable to caretaking and funding priorities in that city.
But hey, they are free to visit and open 24/7 all year round, and within walking distance of each other. There are markers to read at these sites, now known as the "African graveyard" and the "Old Negro burial ground." And wouldn't you know, a factoid, that historically the Old Negro graveyard was also the site of the city's gallows, and at the same time. But not to worry, the gallows have long since been dismantled, the remains of the stone foundation re-purposed for road work nearby.
