Resources for Photos

Hello.

I have made a few posts here in the past few days, and I have already received a tremendous amount of advice and assistance. I am a history teacher and Civil War buff who also makes videos for students when I have the time or need to. In the near future, I hope to produce a series of Civil War videos, and I believe the next two topics will likely be Civil War prisons and hospitals/medical care. Of the two, I believe prisons and prisoners will probably be easier (considering YouTube's strict policies). The reason for this post is that I would like to ask for assistance in finding higher-quality/usable photos. I assume there are already many good threads here with photos, because I stumbled across this forum numerous times while making the Daily Life of a Civil War Soldier video. To make things easier, I would like to know whether there are specific threads that might include these, or if anyone is aware of online resources that already have organized collections. Of course, posting them here would be possible and could also generate a lot of interesting discussion.

While I was making the first video, I was also made aware of the 1911 series named the Photographic History of the Civil War. The copy of the book shared with me contained many great photos, and it appears that Volume 7 includes both prisons/prisoners and hospitals/medical care. Unfortunately, every copy of this book I have found online is much lower in resolution/quality than the other material shared with me. So I would also like to ask if anyone is aware of a higher-quality series of scans of this book (as well as the full series). Here are a few examples of the photos I was able to save from the versions that I found.

These are not of the same quality as the other scan, which looked more like this.

So, if anyone is aware of higher-quality scans, I would love to be made aware of them.

To make matters easier, the list of topics included in the next video would be:

  • Andersonville Prison (photographs, sketches, and maps)
  • Henry Wirz (portraits, trial, execution)
  • Libby Prison (interior and exterior)
  • Belle Isle
  • Elmira Prison
  • Rock Island Prison
  • Point Lookout
  • Camp Chase
  • Prisoner exchange scenes (Lincoln, Grant, Dix-Hill Cartel illustrations)
  • Civil War prison hospitals and cemeteries
This is the already-completed video that documented the Daily Life of Civil War soldiers, so the one I am about to begin working on would follow the same style.

Thanks again for any assistance!

The sample photos you provided are copyrighted so you might be able to trace the originals through the copyright info in the book. Also check the book notes and see if sources are listed. Library of Congress is an obvious sources for digital resources and they are public domain so there are no usage fees. The Virginia Historical Society holds the drawings of Robert Knox Sneden and they probably also have photos in their collections. Remember to cite the sources of all images once you get around to production.

I just wish the Library of Congress had better filters for searching for photos. Dealing with that website is very cumbersome.

I felt that the advanced search option for the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog was pretty good when I was searching for little used photos for the Little White House Museum. Certainly better than some of the other catalogs I found online.

All ten volumes of The Photographic History of the Civil War is available at the Hathi Trust. You can download entire books or single pages.

The Internet Archive has those books and more by Francis T. Miller.

The three book James E. Taylor collection at The Huntington Digital Library might help.
