Hi
My first posting on the forums. I'm based in the UK and have been researching my family's military background. I have come across descendants of a William Crook who emigrated from the UK in the 1600s and who fought for the Confederacy. They are Osborne and Benjamin Edward Crook of the 2nd Alabama Cavalry. I know they both died during the war. Does anyone know anything else about these two men. (I believe they were distantly related to Major General George Crook of the Union army). Any help would be great.
Thanks
Paul Crook

Thanks for the reply lelliott19. I know Osborne died in 1864 and I think, according to Ancestry Benjamin died on November 5th 1864. I don't know where though. Is there anyway of finding out where the 2nd Alabama Cavalry was at the time?
Thanks again
Paul Crook

Looks like your Osborne Crook served in the 38th Alabama Infantry after he was discharged for disability. Carded records show he was enlisted on April 21, 1863 as a Private into Co H 38th Alabama Infantry at Camden (Wilcox County) AL. According to a card in his file, Special Orders 219 Paragraph II includes information on special assignment/detail. He was attached to the hospital August 20, 1863 as a Wardmaster/nurse so the information in Special Orders No. 219 Paragraph II probably tells to what hospital he was assigned. I looked but was unable to locate it. There is also card in his file showing he was issued clothing on April 14, 1864.

Regarding your Benjamin E Crook: he was a Private in Co C 2nd Alabama Infantry (not cavalry.) "The 2nd Alabama [also called Magnolia Regiment] was organized at Fort Morgan, Alabama, during April, 1861. Its members were raised in Calhoun, Pickens, Franklin, Monroe, Clarke, Mobile, and Jackson counties. The regiment formed the garrison at Fort Morgan, serving as infantry and artillery, until March, 1862, when it was ordered to Fort Pillow in Tennessee. Here it disbanded because its term of service had expired." https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Alabama_Civil_War_Confederate_Infantry_Units

So when his term of service expired at Fort Pillow, Benjamin E Crook may have enlisted in another unit. I will keep looking.
