Requesting Permission to Marry

In March 1864, Private Harvey A. Taylor of Company D, 6th Tennessee Cavalry U.S., sent a telegraph to his commanding general requesting leave so that he could go to Memphis to get married. Down at the bottom of the telegraph message someone wrote the following:

"For Christsake let this man come"

I thought it was funny and wanted to share. This document is in the service record of Harvey A. Taylor, 6th Tennessee Cavalry U.S., accessed on Fold3.com.

Pretty funny and goes to show that those who lived and fought then are a lot like us today.

In Harvey Taylor's service record, the card for March - April 1864 lists him as "In Confinement in the Erving Block Memphis," so it looks like he went without permission and got arrested for his trouble. Whether the arrest happened before or after the marriage I don't know yet.
