Request for help finding (Union) unit Hugh E. Linn

One of my ggg grandfather's service is eluding me, and am hoping for help.

Hugh E. Linn
Birth 19 Apr 1835 Pennsylvania, USA possibly Fulton or Franklin county
Death 1891 Pennsylvania, USA probably Bedford county

From at least 1860 to 1880 he was a farmer in Monroe township, Bedford county, PA.

A biography of Hugh's son-in-law said Hugh had enlisted and served 18 months. It's from a County History, so accuracy of the info is possibly questionable.

In searching to find his unit, I've guessed it's PA, and found a few Hugh Linns, but not enough detail to know if any might be "the" Hugh. One served 9 months in Company I, 171st PA Drafted Militia. Could be him, but that unit came from several counties away. Found a second Hugh, but the only information was that he was in a special (unspecified) unit, and other than his name and a number, the rest of the record was blank. Found several others, but the information was so minimal there were no clues.

In addition to Soldiers and Sailors systems, I searched rosters for units from his county.

Any ideas? Appreciate any help anyone might be able to provide.

Is there a PA Adjutant General's report? It might provide a little more info.

Long-distance genealogy can be a challenge. You might either request the military records for the various Hughs, at $25 a pop from the Nat'l Archives, or wait (and wait and wait) for them to be made available on Footnote.

You might also check to see if there are published regimental histories for the regiments involved. Google Books is a good source for this.

There one Hugh Linn listed to have served form PA. I can only assume this may be him....

Brigade at Cumberland MD.Discharged for disability March 30,1863 at Annapolis, a paroled prisoner, a prisoner at surrender of Harpers Ferry Sept 14,1862. Hope this is of some help.

Here is something...

Hugh E. Linn was the 5th child out of 8 children (and the third son) of Charles & Martha Linn,
who came to Bedford Co. from Franklin Co., Pa. Charles' father, John Linn was born in Down, Ireland.

Catherine Von Stein born about 1838, was a daughter of George & Mary Murray /
Von Stein. George Von Stein was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany in about 1806, and came to Bedford Co. from Franklin Co., Pa., just prior to the 1840 census.

Hugh Linn and Catherine Von Stein were married on November 11, 1858 in Monroe Twp.,
Bedford Co., PA. Their first child was born September 30, 1859. They named her Martha Jane "Jennie" Linn.

Badger - That Hugh Linn is the uncle of the one I'm seeking. (He's interesting -- enlisted at age 55 with 2 of his sons. Hugh was a wagoner.)
5Fish - You have the right guy on the genealogy info. (One of the links you give is actually a write-up I did.)
KHalleran - Appreciate the suggestions. May have to just order service records for them all.

The fact that you came up with the same records I did is good confirmation. At first I had accepted the 171st record as the right match, and wrote and posted that on another site. But then as I researched the regiment, learned they had come from several counties in the north, hundreds of miles away from where Hugh lived. That's what made me think I had the wrong record. This morning, I looked at it all again, and now noticed that the 171st was drafted from those northern counties, plus 1 southern county that bordered Hugh's.

Feeling confident we found the right Hugh, and appreciate all your help!

I think we have the wrong guy or he served in two units during the war. I found the pension records for Monroe Township and it places Hugh Linn in the Company B, 3rd Maryland Volunteers ...It looks like Badger Roy may have found the right Hugh Linn....

After looking at the pension records and Company I roster, it looks like we have two different Hugh Linn's but which one is the right one. They joined their regiments a year apart. The first Hugh(3rd Maryland Vol.) seems to match the family history of volunteering and serving 18 months while the second Hugh(171st PA, Inf.) does not match up at all..

The Linn clan was genealogy is big with alot of Hugh Linn's in it..

I vote for the 3rd Maryland ...

Uncle Hugh was born 1808 and married Mary Ann Saylor.
Hugh E. was born 1835 and married Catherine von Stein.

So far the 171st PA appears possible. But, since Uncle Hugh went over the border to enlist, am off to look at other MD units before I move on. Too bad the massive Linn genealogy doesn't list his unit, but am fairly certain I've read it all closely enough to know it isn't there.

It may all make since. Maybe your family history has confused the two Hugh Linn's and the one in the 171st is the right one...
